Enhancing the Rights and Personal Freedoms of People with Disabilities is a guide for human services staff and people who plan about rights issues most commonly encountered in the service process. This guide discusses CQL Canada's approach to rights for individuals with disabilities and the expectations for agency and individual action to support the exercise and protection of individual rights. It also provides guidelines for handling key issues such as consent to health care and other types of decision making, and due process in determining rights and entitlements. This guide will provide some basic direction for actions needed from individual staff, personal support networks, families, and agency management.

New features of the third edition include:

  • Updates on existing chapters

  • New chapter on Ethics in the Context of Disability

  • New chapter on Criminal Law and People Who are Vulnerable

  • As well as being printed in Ontario, the manual will be distributed in three (3) other provinces as a first edition – Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick.  Each province has its own section related to applicable laws.

  • Translation into French language

The Ontario edition is available in both English or French from CQL Canada. The Manitoba edition is available in English only from CQL Canada.
